Sometimes heaven smiles on you and sends a little something unexpected. Something angelic. Two years ago when I was recovering from surgery it was so nice to have an angel baby who just wanted to calmly snuggle with me and help me heal all day. I was worried about taking care of her and it turned out she took care of me. Well, Mary Tessa has turned angel baby on me again. Before I even had a chance to think about it, worry about it, plot for it, she . . .
potty-trained herself.
I know you're trembling, you're in shock. Please don't hate us. I mean I've heard of child-led weaning, but child-led potty-training? It was wild! It was crazy! It was fun and easy! I had not even given potty-training 0.5 seconds of thought. Now that I think about it, Tessa had been giving it thought for at least a year--as soon as she could stand and hover a foot away from anyone using the toilet. (Not Mark, he needs waaaaaay more privacy; but the rest of us, we choose our battles and you know how it is.) She logged lots of hours of observation. Before she logged. Ha ha.
I remember having to elaborately command, bribe, coach, dictate, coerce, and exert all my faculties to help Simon learn. "Okay Si, step here, no scoot over an inch, now sit for 20 more seconds, let's sing a song, let's read while you're on the potty, I'll buy you a convertible, you won't die in the toilet bowl, see your chart!, pee 15 more times and do a poop and we'll buy you car/happymeal/house", and on and on and on to a degree in Bathroom Hostage Negotiation. With Mary Tessa, she and I were already washing our hands at the bathroom sink and discussing something else before I realized she'd done everything and I'd said and done nothing. Instead of Simon's 632 step instruction book on the whole process, Mary was already at Just Go To the Bathroom. Done and done. Quick and easy. Simple. and a Miracle.
Thank you Heaven. This has been an unbelievable gift.

Some people just live right.
I will second that it was much easier to potty train Cody than Nathan. Much less micro managed. Much more just do your business and let's move on. Our firsties were the sacrificial potty training guinea pigs.
Good work, MT. And all those who sacrificed their privacy that this day may be possible. ;)
That's GREAT! Did she already have her birthday? I can't remember which day. Such a cuuuute picture, too. Lance is very interested. He used the potty once and I made a huge deal about it. Then he asked to use it again, but I had about 9 bags of groceries in my arms so I said, "just go in your diaper." What an idiot I am! I probably confused the heck out of him. He had a good thing going and I squashed it. I need to commit and go for it.
Again, good job Mary Tessa. Also, there is nothing cuter than a 2 year old in little tiny undies. It's probably the only age when undies look good on a person. I love it.
Hooray! We are planning on starting potty training tomorrow, as Gabby has showed so much interest already (plus we really want to train her on our rental carpet and not the new house carpet that comes in a month!). However, I am not sure if your blog post is encouraging or not. Fear and hope combined. Is she a Simon or a Mary Tessa? Only time will tell....
These third babies...they're the cherries on top I tell ya!
Love this post. Which is good, since it was so long in coming...
So jealous! That girl is a prodigy. We're still working on George and the going has been VERY SLOW...
I would write about how fortunate you are and how jealous I am, but I have to go change a poopy diaper right now.
I all my years I have never been lucky enough to find one myself. I always knew Simon had a bit of luck!
